Green Fingers at Saint Paul’s

Fruit trees 2

A group of pupils from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe deserve to be congratulated on the enthusiastic way they have put others before themselves. A group of ten Year 10 pupils wanted to raise sufficient money to plant some fruit trees for neighbouring school, Piper Hill High School. The money was raised by the pupils giving up all sweets and chocolate for one week.

The pupils worked with EMERGE 3Rs, the Manchester charity and social enterprise which focuses on sustainability and recycling, to plant a number of apple and pear trees at the school.

"We want to get children interested in what they eat, while getting them out in the fresh air. What better way is there than showing them how to grow their own food?" explained Mr Alan Chapman from Saint Paul’s. “As well as providing some attractive trees and their resultant fruit for the pupils of Piper Hill, we also wanted our pupils to gain some first-hand gardening experience and educate them in the skills needed to grow their own food.”

He added “An added bonus is promoting physical activity through digging and gardening.”

“I’m really pleased with the way the Saint Paul’s pupils have got involved with the REAL Enterprise Awards,” said Ms Vicki Leng, Education Liaison Worker for Emerge 3Rs. “ This group has really demonstrated good enterprising skills, including team work and communication and presentation skills. All of this was their idea, and they should be really proud of themselves and what they have achieved for others. The aim of the Awards is to get young people thinking about social and environmental issues, and they have certainly done that.”

The pupils have also worked to the level needed to achieve an Asdan qualification.

“I would like to commend those pupils involved for their desire to help others and the interest they showed in the project,” commented Mr Wiktor Daron, Head Teacher at Saint Paul’s. “The trees look magnificent and I am looking forward to seeing the apples and pears which will grow on them.”
