Pupils from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe were invited to attend sessions on the Key 103 bus which recently visited the school with the aim of highlighting the problems that can occur in later life should young people acquire a criminal record. The session was organised by Manchester Airport, Manchester Police and Key 103 radio.

The pupils were given the task of producing an advert on the Key 103 bus, which is equipped with state of the art media production equipment and is staffed by professional teachers and journalists, focusing on the problems which a criminal record can bring.

The pupils had to prepare a script and record a radio advert aimed at young people of a similar age. The next stage is for the pupils to attend a session at Manchester Airport looking at employment opportunities at the airport and the crime record checks involved.

The best five adverts will be played in school assemblies hosted by a Key 103 DJ and the pupils will be asked to vote which they preferred. The winning students being invited to make ‘fit for air’ commercials and a radio show at the Key 103 studios in Manchester.

“The aim of the session was to encourage our pupils to look into the important issues of possessing a criminal record and the damage it can do to your future,” explained Ms Seona Murray, a Media Studies teacher at Saint Paul’s.

Ms Murray added “The students really got into their stride, looking at the serious and real-life issue of a crime record. They really enjoyed working together and putting some good ideas down, with the help and advice of the professionals from Key 103. Not only has it been great fun but also some important messages have been communicated and it has helped improve the confidence and self-esteem of our pupils.”

“The pupils found the session on the Key 103 media bus extremely enjoyable,” commented Mr Wiktor Daron, Head Teacher at Saint Paul’s. “At the same time it enabled them to develop the important life skills of communication, team working, creativity and time management. It has improved their motivation to learn and succeed, encourages independent learning and the development of new skills and educated them about employment law.”
